Normally that would take at least a couple days.
The sad state of the domain squatting industry, and society in general, is that after a horrible shooting a bunch of “business people” sprint to grab up every VT shooting/massacre domain possible.
If your first thought upon seeing the news of this horrible shooting, is “Oh crap, how can I make money off of this?”, then you need to get off the computer because the internet has completely warped your ability to care for other people.
After noticing that domains were popping up right after recent tragedies like Katrina, I was curious how often these tragedy induced domain buying frenzies actually happen, and the results were naturally disgusting and not surprising. This latest VT tragedy is just a long history of people snatching up tragedy domain names immediately and then selling them off later for a profit.
The domains that were immediately purchased within 20 mins of the shooting are:
virginiatechshooting.com
virginiatechmassacre.com
vtmassacre.com
vtshooting.com
Special Note: virginiatechschoolshooting.com is still avilable! Hurry, you too can profit from other people’s suffering!
UPDATES:
The first domain is already up for sale already. These poor kids aren’t even in the ground yet and this guy is already making his money: (Copy and paste if you want, I’m not linking to their auction.)

I understand your feeling disturbed at the first reaction “Oh crap, how can I make money off of this?”
But do you think it’s a little off that your first reaction was: “Oh, crap, I wonder who’s making money off of this?”
admin // April 16, 2007 at 3:36 pm
I figured someone would ask that, and yes its sad that my reaction was that there must be someone profiting off of this. The most obvious people are always CNN, Fox News, etc…
But, figured that there had to be more people making money off of suffering, and what do you know, there are.
But yes, its very depressing that when something bad happens, so many of us, including myself obviously, think that there is someone somewhere exploiting it for gain.

And the guy with virginiatechshooting.com hasn’t even put a site up yet! get with it lazy ass bastard!
admin // April 16, 2007 at 4:30 pm
Actually, I doubt they will put a site up. Probably will sit on it and wait for people to make offers for it.
Makes me wonder… Who is worse, the person buying it, or the person who is offering hundreds/thousands of $’s to buy it?
Bobby Digital // April 16, 2007 at 5:39 pm
When a site like this is done in good taste you cannot complain. Also there are no ads on http://vtechdies.com/
quirkyalone // April 16, 2007 at 6:50 pm
The ads are already there.
Seth // April 16, 2007 at 7:32 pm
Thats pretty awful. Wow, I didnt even think anyone would put up a site like that for at least a week or so.
Joanna // April 17, 2007 at 12:52 am
Has it occurred to anyone that an interested party (e.g. the university in question) might have bought up some of the domain names to prevent their use in spurious manners?

Ehhh, I don’t think it took the Internet to do this to these people, they were probably greedy bastards from the start.
Condolences to all who were affected by this…

As one of those people I can tell you exactly what went through my mind (after the shock of the event sank in) in registering the domain. It was “there should be a site for people to discuss the tragedy that is not just comments scattered across and attached to the thousands of articles that will be written”
When people look back at this tragedy they will find all of the sensational articles written by the media, the books, movies, etc. But the actual thoughts and feelings of real people around the world don’t have a single, coherent place to be found. So I put up a forum on that domain last night in the hopes that real people will find it useful. When my father was battling cancer last year he found a lot of benefit in the group he belonged to who were in the same position.
And perhaps, just maybe, there is a tiny possibility that some future person who is contemplating an act such as this might come across this site and see not the sensationalism of the mainstream media, but rather the human side and feelings that their potential actions could cause. And just possibly they might change their minds.
And no, i’m not going to mention the name because then people will say i’m just trying to promote it. And no there is no advertising, PPC, etc. on it.
admin // April 17, 2007 at 2:58 pm
Jay, thanks for posting. I was hoping out of the many domains that have been registered that at least a couple were going to people that actually cared about the people and were trying to help out. I know that a majority went to people that are simply going to try to sell them, but I know a few must be going to respectable sources like yourself.

When I read this page, the first thing I could think was WHOIS!!!!!!!!!!!!
so I whoised the top 11 sites, and my findings are below. I agree that making a website to educate the people about the political stupidity of making your statements with a gun; however, I don’t advocate buying up many domain names to make your site more visible or to (dare i say) profit.
why aren’t the people talking about the anti-depression drugs, and the 20-year lock-up of the documents surrounding columbine, and the fact that the columbine boys had been in some kind of anti-social reform program from 1998-1999.
We also need to stop locking up our schools when somebody starts shooting. it is the MO of the police, AND the shooter to lock the doors (he chained them shut) and subsequently, the killer is able to kill everybody locked inside, and the police are able to catch the killer, and have lots of innocent victims –> funding.
isn’t it strange how when the democrats get into power, our schools get shot up, and when the republicans get into power, buildings blow up
and without further re-due, I present to you, the hottest new celebrity profiteers on the web… (not so fun being a celebrity is it?)

Well….
Maybe time to remove the “right given by god in the constitution” also called 2nd amendment where anyone can own and carry a gun.
That was needed in 1776 when the royal navy could come sailing any time but as it is now, the US armed forces might be the ones dealing with any attack and not the “trigger happy militia”.

Virginaitechshooting.com is taking donations that is wrong. VaTechshooting.org has ads but thy are just google ads in a template they used no big deal – not like they stand to make any money plus that site lets you place articles on it and comments..
admin // April 18, 2007 at 9:39 am
Virginaitechshooting.com should not be taking donations. Their are long established charities that are collecting money already. They have support and distribution networks to insure that the largest possible percentage of donations get to the people that need them. They have track records of faithfully upholding their donors and tax records to show where all the money has gone.
This person is simply collecting money and “promising” to send it along. I would say their is a 90%+ chance he is not a registered non-profit charity, so there will be absolutely no way to track where your money goes after you send it.
